Doctors: SCOTUS Ruling a Disaster in Slow Motion; Doctors Will Bail & Patients Will Lose, Says DPMA
ByWASHINGTON, June 28, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The Doctor Patient Medical Association issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court ruling from Kathryn Serkes, DPMA Chairman and author of the DPMA survey and report: “The Future of Medicine – What’s Wrong, Who’s to Blame and How to Fix It.”.

“We’re disappointed that the Supreme Court did not overturn these provisions. We certainly had hopes that the empty promises would be overturned so that we could get on with directing the conversation back to what we really need to do to bring medical care to more people at lower costs.
Most doctors don’t believe that PPACA will actually help patients get better access to medical care. Doctors clearly understand what Washington does not – that a piece of paper that says you are ‘covered’ by insurance, or ‘enrolled’ in Medicare or Medicaid does not translate to actual medical care when doctors can’t afford to see patients at the lowball payments, and patients have to jump through government and insurance company bureaucratic hoops.
“This is a painful deception – these are promises of care that the government cannot deliver unless doctors are forced to participate in system in which they have lost confidence. Unless something changes, many doctors have reached a tipping point and are ready to start bailing out. When 8 out of 10 doctors are thinking about quitting, we have a disaster in slow motion that is just beginning.
“They are literally begging government to get out of the way so they can practice medicine and take care of patients. We need to get doctors and patients together to take charge and work on solutions.
“Unless we start figuring out ways to deliver actual medical care, we’ll have millions with a worthless piece of paper that says they are ‘insured’ when PPACA takes full effect.
“And like Elvis, the doctors will have left the building.”
NOTE: The Doctor Patient Medical Assn. is a non-partisan group working for freedom in medicine for doctors AND patients. Our goal is increased choice and access to medical care.
