“Missouri’s Lieutenant Governor Files Suit Against Healthcare Law”
ByAP 07/08/10
“Missouri Lt. Governor Peter Kinder filed a lawsuit Wednesday over the federal health care overhaul, accusing Congress of overstepping its authority, trampling on state sovereignty and attempting to interfere with consumer’s health decisions”. Notably, “numerous states have challenged the overhaul since it was signed into law last March, Missouri’s lawsuit filed by Kinder in his personal and official capacities and by three other residents asserts that the federal government cannot compel people to buy a product, and cannot require state officials to participate in enforcing a “federal scheme”.
The Kansas City Business Journal (07/08/10) notes, “The defendants named in the suit are Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, and US Attorney General Eric Holder”. After filing the suit, Kinder stated, “Missouri, like many other states, is cash-strapped and cannot afford the huge financial burden of this bill.”
