Continuing Coverage Of Health Insurance Rate Requests.

June 29 2015
Outlets continue to report on the 2016 rate requests recently filed by health insurers offering coverage on the ACA exchanges. CNBC (6/4) reports that Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas last year “took up to a $400 million loss on its individual, Obamacare-compliant plans, according to filings disclosed earlier this week by the federal government.” The insurer cited that loss “in requesting an average rate hike of 19.97 percent for individual plans next year, including those sold on the federal Obamacare exchange HealthCare.gov.” The proposed rate hike was disclosed Monday on the government’s new Rate Review website, which includes requested increases of 10 percent or more. The AP (6/4) reports that eight Minnesota health plans “have proposed big premium increases for 2016, ranging from 11 to 74 percent, drawing an angry response from Gov. Mark Dayton on Wednesday.” Blue Cross and Blue Shield, the piece notes, is seeking to raise prices on some of its plans by 50 to 58 percent. Dayton (D) said in a statement, “The proposed rate increases from Minnesota’s health insurers are outrageous, given that our state’s health care costs have been increasing by only 3 percent,” adding, “They underscore the need for a rigorous review of those proposed rates by the Minnesota Department of Commerce before they become final on October 1st.”
